The GRIGRI is a slef-locking belay device which also functions well as an ascender or inline descender when needed.Once properly installed, the device locks onto the rope with a rotating stainless steel cam when weighted. Unlocking is accompished by unweighting the GRIGRI, or pulling the self retracting handle, which unlocks the cam .With the cam held open by the handle , the user can rappel, stopping the descent when necessary by releasing the handle . Additionally, a simple self-ratcheting Z-rig can be made with the GRIGRI as the first pulley in the system.
